Cue For Good’s Journey at the B Corp Festival 2024: Exploring Louder Than Words

On September 10th and 11th, 2024, I had the incredible experience at the “Louder Than Words” B Corp Festival, held at the heart of Oxford.

This year’s festival was monumental, gathering over 2,000 businesses committed to redefining the corporate role in addressing global challenges. The energy was palpable, and the discussions truly captured the #BCorp spirit, igniting excitement for the future of sustainable business practices.

Event Highlights and Key Themes

The festival was structured around three central themes:

  1. Regenerative Futures: Sessions focused on pioneering ways businesses can integrate regenerative practices to restore and sustain ecosystems while driving economic growth. Notable speakers, like Chris Turner from B Lab UK, emphasized the shift towards businesses becoming net positive contributors to the environment.
  2. Leading the Change: This theme explored the importance of leadership in driving systemic transformation. Panels included insights from industry leaders and B Corp founders who shared stories of their journeys in building purpose-driven organizations that prioritize people and the planet.
  3. Now, Together: The emphasis here was on collective action. With over 40 fringe events held throughout Oxford, attendees engaged in hands-on workshops, networking sessions, and collaborative think tanks that highlighted the power of unity in achieving shared goals.

Day 1: Kicking Off with Energy and Insight

The festival launched with infectious energy, setting the stage for meaningful conversations led by the dynamic event hosts, Shonali Devereaux and Mathilde Gerritsma.

One of the standout sessions was delivered by Mary Portas OBE, Founder & Creative Director at the Portas Agency and Co-Chair of the Better Business Act. Her talk, “The Business of Beautiful Business,” captivated the audience, exploring how aesthetics and ethics can align in business for positive impact.

Another panel discussion featured key figures in the B Corp movement, including:

  • Clay Brown, Co-Lead Executive at B Lab Global
  • Judy Rodrigues, Director of Standards at B Lab Global
  • Rosalind Holley, Director of Marketing & Communications at B Lab UK
  • Lucy Muigai, CEO of B Lab Africa
  • Francesca Cassidy, Managing Editor at Raconteur

This session delved into the “Future of the B Corp Movement,” discussing how businesses can act as catalysts for change and reshape the economic landscape.

Day 2: Reflection and Inspiration

The momentum continued on Day 2. Patrick Grant led a significant session on “Less, Better, Local,” emphasizing the impact of conscious business decisions that prioritize sustainability and community engagement.

Hosts Shonali and Mathilde engaged the audience in discussions about how individuals can contribute to the B Corp movement, reinforcing the theme of collective responsibility. Another impactful panel, “From Insiders to Activists: Navigating Systems Change for a Better Economy,” featured:

  • Anuradha Chugh, Trustee at B Lab UK
  • Chris Skidmore, former UK Energy Minister
  • Amy Clarke, Co-Founder of Tribe Impact Capital LLP and Board member at B Lab UK

This panel highlighted how both businesses and individuals can advocate for and drive systemic change in the economy, further emphasizing the B Corp. commitment to prioritizing people and the planet.
