The Black Friday/Cyber Monday weekend is the busiest time of the year for retail. This is the time when a lot of businesses will significantly boost their annual sales and acquire new customers.
In recent years, a lot of customers have started to view the Black Friday weekend in a negative light. Not only does Black Friday have a negative impact on the planet (around 80% of items bought on Black Friday are thrown away after a few uses), but heavy discounting can also diminish the value of a brand’s products and services.
While some brands will opt to completely boycott the BFCM weekend by closing shop for a few days, not all businesses can afford to do so. Thankfully, there are some more ethical and sustainable alternatives to a traditional Black Friday Campaign
Give Back Friday is a way for businesses to Give Back and make a difference. Instead of opting for a massive discount, brands will instead donate a portion of the proceeds to an initiative that they care about.
Green Friday is a Black Friday alternative focused on environmental sustainability. In a similar fashion to Give Back Friday, brands will donate a portion of proceeds to environmental conservation charities, tree planting efforts, or other sustainable initiatives.
Blue Friday is focused on preserving our oceans and waterways. Most brands will opt to fundraise for ocean conservation projects or support clean drinking water initiatives in countries facing water poverty.
Over the past decade, Giving Tuesday has grown into a global movement for people and brands to give back (on the Tuesday after Cyber Monday). If you are interested in joining the Giving Tuesday movement, you can register here.
